Road crashes remain the leading cause of death for young people in Canada.
- Young drivers aged 16-24 accounted for 22.6 per cent of driver fatalities and 24.6 per cent of driver serious injuries, despite the fact that drivers in the age group only accounted for 13 per cent of licensed drivers (1).
- Young drivers (age 16-24) accounted for 18.75 per cent of all collisions, but for only 13.6 per cent of all licensed drivers.(2)
- In a study (3) of young drivers:
- 38 per cent reported taking a risk while driving
- Over 90 per cent report driving in excess of the speed limit
