Toronto, Ontario – October 22, 2020 – According to research, more than 90 per cent of collisions are the result of driver error or driver condition, and many are preventable through small shifts in road behaviour. Increasing road safety for all users is a shared responsibility, which is why the Traffic Injury Research Foundation (TIRF), Consolidated Collision Services (CCS), and RSA Canada and its affiliate insurers, Canadian Northern Shield Insurance Company (CNS) and Western Assurance Company (WA), are pleased to announce a partnership to support safe driving.
As part of the partnership, CCS is donating $5 to TIRF for each RSA Canada, CNS, and WA customer auto repair over three years to support ongoing educational resource development and research around traffic fatalities, key risks, and causes. The donations are being made based on the number of repairs completed at CCS locations in the provinces where the company operates (Ontario, Alberta and Nova Scotia).
To further contribute to road safety, TIRF is leveraging its research to develop educational materials focusing on preventable collisions and some of the factors contributing to collisions that drivers can avoid, including:
- Speeding and the incremental risk for each additional 10km/hr
- Distraction and the unpredictable nature of the road environment
- Over-reliance on Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) as a replacement for safe driving behaviours
The materials will be designed to help Canadians identify the key risks in each area and develop strategies to avoid potential crashes and injuries. The information will be available to all Canadians on TIRF’s website and to RSA Canada, CNS, and WA customers who are completing auto repairs at CCS locations. Details will also be distributed to RSA Canada’s insurance broker network.
“Ongoing research and education are critical to effectively moving the dial when it comes to reducing traffic fatalities,” says Robyn Robertson, President and CEO, TIRF. “We look forward to combining our efforts with CCS and RSA Canada with the end goal of reducing personal risk of harm on the roads.”
“Even a small collision can cause severe damage to a vehicle and, more importantly, put lives at risk,” says Mike Beier, General Manager, CCS. “We’re thrilled to support TIRF’s research and help deliver road-safety education to our customers when collisions are top-of-mind.”
“We can’t remove life’s uncertainties, but as experts in risk, we know there are many ways for people and businesses to protect the things they care about,” says Karen Mican, Senior Vice President, Claims and Chief Claims Officer, RSA Canada. “Traffic fatalities and auto damages continue to be a major concern for road users and we all have a responsibility to take action to keep each other safe on the roads.”
The partnership is part of RSA Canada’s Confident Futures corporate responsibility strategy, aimed at helping customers avoid risk using insight, data and product development expertise.
