Our Claims Process

Making a claim – step-by-step

We like to keep the claims process simple and straight forward. Your Claims Representative will help you every step of the way. But you may find it’s easier if you know in advance what happens at each stage of your claim.

RSA's step by step approach to making an insurance claim

STEP 1 – REPORTING YOUR CLAIM

Need help? Go to our claims reporting page.

STEP 2 – PROVIDING DETAILS

Here is a list of information you’ll need to provide for an auto or home claim.

STEP 3 – ASSESSING AND REPAIRING THE DAMAGE

We’ll assess the damage and you can start making arrangements for repairs to be made to your vehicle, home or property.

Vehicle damage

Home or property damage

You can have your vehicle repaired at a facility of your choice, or you can choose an RSA Trusted Repair Facility.

If your home or property has been lost or damaged, you may need help with
•    repairs and clean-up
•    safeguarding your contents from further damage
•    evaluating lost, damaged or stolen items

Why use an RSA Trusted Repair Facility?
We’ll guarantee the repairs as long as you own the vehicle and insure it with us.

Why use a preferred vendor?
You may only need one estimate, depending on the amount of damage or value of the claimed items.

You can choose your own vendors to help with this, or use one of our preferred vendors

STEP 4 – HELPING INJURED CLAIMANTS

If you’re injured, we’ll assign a specially trained Claims Representative for you.  She or he will send you the forms you’ll need. You’ll need to complete some, along with your health care provider, and if you are off work, your employer will need to complete a form too. (If you live in Ontario, you can find out more about the forms on the Financial Services Commission of Ontario website.)

You will need to get the forms completed and returned to us promptly so that we can process your claim as quickly as possible.

We’ll work with you, your health care provider and your employer to help you recover and return to your normal daily life.

STEP 5 – ISSUING THE PAYMENT

After we’ve assessed your claim, we’ll issue a cheque. It may be issued to you, or directly to the vendor. You may need to endorse a cheque at this stage.

STEP 6 – COMPLETING YOUR CLAIM

Upon your request, we can notify you when we’re about to close your file. We’ll always notify your broker when we close the file.

What do you need to do? Keep all of your paperwork related to the claim. And don’t forget to let us know if you want us to contact you before we close your file.
